NEWS: Dam Native Sophomore Album Out Now
If you have a clue about Aotearoa Rap Music, then you should know who Dam Native are!
Below is the WORD from the DAM NATIVE Camp.
The much-anticipated second Dam Native Album is ready to launch and should not be missed. Hip-Hop pioneers responsible for an “Urban Musical Cultural Revolution”
DAM NATIVE Daniel Haimona better known as Hypethenative was born in Wellington and is of Te Arawa, Tainui and Ngati Kahunungu descent.
Hypethenative is the Poetic Mike Master of his Pioneering Album KDRU Kaupapa Driven Rhymes Uplifted … in his words “ahead of his time why a lot of you missed it.” Produced by Zane Lowe and released by Tangata Records in 1996. In the same year the album won him two music awards most promising group and most promising male vocalist. And a hit single Behold my cool style, which went on to win best music video in the flying fish awards.
And now accompanied 15 years later by the singing, guitar lead and gifted vocalist Bryson Campbell, Dam Natives new album Aotearoa Nobody does it Better is still ahead of its time but this time don’t miss it. Grant Smithies writes in his book Soundtrack 118 great New Zealand Albums … “he [Dam Native] has never received the wider success that he deserves. Lets hope that he doesn’t stop until he has.”
No he has not stopped it just takes time to follow up such a great first album with an even better one. Record companies saw hip-hop as a passing phase in the 90’s and Dam Native went underground after the first album in disgust. He was signed by Heartmusic in 2003 and slowly created his second album as a response to what he considered “kid hop”. He wanted to make adult music for adults. While some like to put albums out every other day he takes a less is more approach.
Heralded by every MC in New Zealand as the Maker and Leader of NZ Rap history (go on ask them yourselves) Dam Native have put the heart back into Hip Hop music once more to deliver an exceptional Second Album of highly crafted verses. With guest MC Tyna on Sirens in the City and Strong beats by Robert Lundon and Bryson Campbell who keeps the hard beats infectious.
And killer songs like Lick My Patu
We’re just greater/it doesn’t mean that I hate ya/ so don’t even try to defy the laws of nature/ passion/ perseverance/ hardwork is what it took/ and the golden rule/ don’t hang with motherf**kers who get shook.
And Cracked It
I’ve already cracked it/see what I’ve got/ what is perceived of me/it might not seem I have a lot/ but my self-esteem/ it seems/ is no dream/ its boiling hot/ enemies/ don’t exist for me/ we all love that native hip-hop.
To tunes like Whakarongo mai nei and Only You. Even if you don’t like Hip- hop you can’t not love this musical story.
If you want to know about true Maori style then take a leaf from the pages of Dam Natives Lyric sheets and plug it into your ears before pasting it on your bedroom wall.
No flash producers, no overseas recording deals and no big budget and still this one of a kind Hip-hop album will last long after all others are dead.
The Band
The Dam Native band is made up of 6 members and is a patriotic, musical and lyrical testament to Aotearoa. Tom Atkinson on Drums, Joseph Hoani Dylan Keating on bass, Timothy Williams on Keyboards, Bryson Campbell aka BlakMan on lead guitar, MC vocals, Pirimia Falwasser aka Nativesixonetwo MC vocals and Daniel Haimona aka HypetheNative MC Supreme. The band has transformed the hard edge beats into musical magic and is arguably the best Hip-hop band in the world.
You can buy this album here
Check this gig next Saturday ya'll! Experience Dam Native Live!
Peace.

NEWS: PACIFIC UNDERGROUND releases Island Summer CD
This is from our aiga in Christchurch - Pacific Underground. They have been holding it down since I can remember. In fact they looked after me the first time I ever went to Christchurch! In fact all the rap that was coming out of Christchurch I heard through Pacific Underground. Recognise!
[PRESS RELEASE FROM P.U]
In time for the coming summer Pacific Underground serves up their new CD Island Summer for release on Saturday 6 November in Christchurch, at Nga Hau E Wha National Marae in Aranui.
Named after the live show, musical director and producer Pos Mavaega has recorded music that combines the flavours of the warm tropics with soul and nostalgia in the superbly crafted original songs and traditional music of Samoa.
Excellent reviews of the live show has praised the music as it “evokes the smells and sounds of Samoa”, being “luscious and melodious”, and also that the Island Summer concept “succeeds magnificantly”.
The moving tribute to his parents who brought with them their traditional music and customs, included a 30 piece guitar orchestra and band.
“Whether you’ve been to the islands or not, the music will take you there.” Says Mavaega.
Island Summer CD captures the frontline musicians with Pos who are: - Tanya Muagututi’a singer/ songwriter, Andrew Sione (Tribalincs) and Hemi Lesatele on second and third guitars; Seta Timo (LA Mitchell’s Nativa Band) on bass guitar and Chris Searle, PU’s resident drummer – all who have grown with the show since its beginning in 2005.
The completion of the project has continued throughout Christchurch’s earthquake.
“Finishing the recording has been a challenge all on its own – the last recording sessions have taken place in Christchurch, Dunedin and as far away as Las Vegas. Andrew who is the ‘wing-man’ was on tour with a band in the US, so had to do it there. Once we got his parts, the earthquake happened and we were finishing off sessions throughout the aftershocks” says Pos Mavaega
The celebration at the Marae is free to attend, will have a live performance of some of the songs and copies of the CD will be available for purchase on the night.
The long awaited sophomore album of Pacific Underground is also the second for Pos as producer / musician – the first being the ground-breaking CD ‘Landmark’ in 1999, a compilation album that has the very first recordings of Scribe, the Naked Samoan’s and Christchurch Hip Hop pioneers Beats ‘n’ Pieces.

VIDEO: Old Clips from Dominant Species!
Noticed that WMG pulled off any versions of these videos online... Not sure how I am supposed to recoup on my recording agreement if this ish ain't online promoting the album! And maybe WMG can blame themselves for why this record didn't go any further due to disgruntled record company workers who were made jobless when the merger with Festival Music occurred just in time for this record to drop!?! Enjoy people while this lasts before it gets blocked again!

FASHION: TAWHIAO.COM - Debut Accomplished
Well now...not having the opportunity to watch the actual show myself I scouted the internet for photos of homegirls work on the catwalk.
Completely and unequivocally AOTEAROA - Congratulations TAWHIAO, talk about a well deserved introduction to the international platform of fashion (spirit fingers working here) - enough talk though show them pictures ya'll. You can find full size pictures here.
Also big ups to MiroModa for existing and affording these opportunities to our talented designers that need just a little awhi to break into a very difficult industry. I hope international visitors were paying attention!
If you can't tell by the tiny-as pictures here, Tawhiao utilises the harakeke plant to enhance her outfits.
Now unlike when 'Pacific Fashion' broke out onto the fashion catwalks at competitions like Manukau City's 'Cult Couture' and Westfields Style Pasifika, most garments were cut out 'fala' or 'whariki' (traditional woven mats).
However, Tawhiao has always woven her outfits into shape, not cut out. Meaning a hell of a lot more work and thought goes into making an outfit out of plant!
This collection of works is called 'Te Whiri', which basically means to plait. And in home girls own words the collection is "Samurai, Roman, the Masai, and Maori of course. It's totally military warrior woman meets marching girl." Love it :-)
Her label website is here, her shop in Avondale Auckland is here. You can find all sorts of things in there and probably won't leave the shop empty handed! I never do. Congratulations Shona, big hip-hop love at you.

OLD SCHOOL: Breakdance - Irene Cara: 1983
Most of you overseas cats would never have seen the NZ version of the Irene Cara video - Breakdancing.
Features a lot of old school heads in here - including the brother Joe Moana from The Patea Maori Club video, Poi E.
Video footage looks like the same competition that was featured on an old 80's music programme called Shazam! Thanks to the person who was forward thinking enough to cut something like this up for us back in the 80's and also to Simon for sharing on crack-book with the subject line of wtf is a megazoid. Nice Saturday afternoon viewing.

SUPPORT: Little Lotus Project
Good morning People!
Just dropping word on a project from local artists here in Aotearoa (NZ).
In November 2010, Little Lotus returns to the same two Children on the Edge supported schools The Good Karma Project visited on the Thai/Burma border, TMK School and Sky Blue School.
This time, Little Lotus takes four New Zealand artists along for the ride. Tanja Jade (aka Misery), Peap Tarr, Alex Chalmers and Pat Shepherd will work alongside the children, running toy-making workshops, collaborating with the children to paint a school mural, and helping the children to create their own masquerade ball with local music and costume design workshops.
Upon returning to New Zealand, Little Lotus brings Tanja together with fellow collaborator, MC Tourettes to write and illustrate a Little Lotus picture book, documenting the journey and inspired by the children. All proceeds raised from the sale of the book, art and photography will go directly to the refugee children. Photography taken during the project will be uploaded in real time and can be ordered online.
Along the way, their blog will feature regular photo uploads, journey updates, video diaries, the highs, the lows, the stories and mishaps, and most importantly, the hopes of the forgotten children of Burma.
They need your help to make this project even more incredible:
1. Donate: "The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration, but its donation. Every little bit, no matter how small (or big) pushes the project further.
2. Follow the project: They aim to educate and entertain with our daily video diaries, so please subscribe for updates on the homepage to be kept in the loop.
3. Share: Please forward this email on to anyone you think might be interested in the project. Knowledge is power people.

3. Share: Please forward this email on to anyone you think might be interested in the project. Knowledge is power people.

Bank details are pasted at the end of this message for those who aren't fans of the plastic and would prefer to do a direct transfer.
Remember, your donations go a long way out there, donating $30 to the kids will feed over 100 children a nutritious lunch to get them through the day.

GIG: Island Vibe, Queensland
Yes - me and my band are heading over to Australia a couple of times this year - the next trip is for the Island Vibe Festival on North Stradbroke Island in Queensland.
Respect to the traditional custodians of the Quandamooka region (Moreton Bay area), the Nunukal, Nughie and Goenpul people of Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) and Moorgumpin (Moreton Island) for this opportunity and to the committee of Island Vibe - we are looking forward to enjoying those island vibes, niceness.
I will be playing a couple of times too, dropping a deejay set on one night and emceeing with The Nomad during the weekend as well as playing with my four piece band.
We are gonna catch as many performers as possible, always good for the creative soul I reckon, banging heads with like-minded people. Have a good week people!
